In the past three decades the prevalence of type 2 diabetes has risen dramatically in countries of all income levels. Keeping this in mind, MGM dental college IQAC and student council celebrated World Diabetic Day on 16th November 2021.
Dr. Jagannath Dixit Sir was invited as the keynote speaker for the event. He is known for propounding a diet plan to reverse obesity and type 2 diabetes. The Dixit diet is known to have a 90% reversal rate.
Dr. Sandeep Rai and Dr. Sanjay Gandhi also shared their expertise on various topics.Dignitaries were Hon. VC MGMIHS Dr. Shashank Dalvi, respected vice chairman MGM trust, Dr. P.M. Jadhav, Medical director Dr. Sudhir Kadam, Managing trustee Dr. Nitin Kadam, Dean Dr. Srivalli Natarajan. A value added course on Dental Photography was conducted by Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) of MGM Dental College and Hospital, Kamothe. Our guest speaker, Dr. Avinash Narayankar introduced the interns’ batch to the world of dental photography and explained the concepts involved with great passion. Dr. Avinash also gave useful tips about the most common errors during dental photography and how to avoid them.

AN INFORMATIVE WEEK FULL OF FUN AND LEARNING CAME TO AN END WITH ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT TOPICS INFECTION CONTROL AND ANTIBIOTICS FOLLOWED BY YET ANOTHER INTERESTING ONE: RESEARCH SPIRAL.
THE SEMINAR ON INFECTION CONTROL WAS TAKEN BY DR VISHAKHA DEVRUKHKAR GIVING THE NEWLY APPOINTED INTERNS INSIGHTS OVER HOW INFECTION CONTROL INCLUDING BASIC HAND WASHING TECHNIQUES, GLOVING, USING OF MOUTH MASKS AND HEAD CAPS IS SIMPLE, YET OF GREAT IMPORTANCE IN EVERYDAY CLINICAL PRACTICE. ALSO, THE IMPORTANCE OF POST EXPOSURE PROPHYLAXIS AND PROTOCOL FOR NEEDLE PRICK INJURY WAS SHARED IN GREAT DETAIL.
NEXT, AN INTERACTIVE SEMINAR ON ANTIBIOTICS WAS TAKEN BY DR ADIL GANDEVIVALA WHERE HE ENLIGHTENED THE INTERNS OVER THE PRECISE AND OPTIMUM USE OF ANTIBIOTICS AS AN ADJUNCT TO THE PROVIDED DENTAL TREATMENT. ‘ANTIBIOTICS SHOULD BE PRESCRIBED ONLY WHEN REQUIRED’ WAS AN IMPORTANT TAKE HOME MESSAGE FOR EVERYONE PRESENT. THE MOST COMMONLY FACED SITUATION WITH THE MOST SUITABLE DRUGS TO BE PRESCRIBED ALONG WITH ITS DOSES WERE PARTICULARLY DISCUSSED.
THE SECOND HALF OF THE DAY WAS SCHEDULED FOR CDE BY THE DEPT. OF PUBLIC HEALTH DENTISTRY ON RESEARCH FOR UNDERGRADUATES. GUEST SPEAKERS DR PRADNYA KAKODKAR AND DR NITIN GUPTA FROM D. Y. PATIL, PIMPRI WERE WELCOMED BY OUR HONOURABLE DEAN MAM DR SABITA RAM BY PRESENTING A SAPLING EACH. DR PRADNYA KAKODKAR, A VERY ENTHUSIASTIC SPEAKER LED THE PROGRAM BY EXPLAINING THE KEY TERMS OF THE SUBJECT AND THE RESEARCH PYRAMID WITH KEEN INTEREST. TO TAKE IT FURTHER, DR NITIN GUPTA GRABBED THE ATTENTION OF THE AUDIENCE BY MAKING THE MONOTONOUS SUBJECT VERY INTERESTING. CO-RELATING WITH THE UNDERGRADUATES PRESENT, HE EXPLAINED HOW CURIOUS, INQUISITIVE AND MINDFUL QUESTIONS CAN HELP FIND RESEARCH TOPICS AND FORM PROPER QUESTIONNAIRES FOR THE SAME. THE SPEAKERS MOTIVATED THE UNDERGRADUATES TO TAKE UP TOPICS ON RESEARCH THAT WOULD ENHANCE THEIR KNOWLEDGE AND HELP THEM FIND ANSWERS. THEY ALSO ASSURED THEIR FULL SUPPORT AND HELP, IF AND WHEN REQUIRED.
WITH THIS A WEEK LONG PROGRAM OF INTERESTING SEMINARS AND RESOURCEFUL LECTURES CAME TO AN END AND THE INTERNS WERE BOOSTED HIGH ENOUGH TO START WITH THE NEW MILESTONE OF THEIR LIFE: INTERNSHIP AND CLINICS.
GUIDED IMPLANT SURGERY HELD IN MGM DENTAL COLLEGE AND HOSPITAL
MGM dental college and hospital had organized a workshop on guided implant surgery: stepping stone towards digitalization followed by a live surgery demonstration for the interns on 12th September 2017 from 9:00am to 3:30pm which was taken by Dr. Pratik Chedda and Dr. Rahul Shah.
The event started with introducing the guests and a speech from the dean of college Dr. Sabita Ram. the session was initiated by Dr. Rahul Shah by putting some light on the types of implant systems and uses of the digital software. after which the interns were provided with some tea and biscuits followed by a brief lecture Dr Pratik Chedda on the software which was being used he showed the different aspects of the software and its various uses also demonstrated treatment planning of the patient on whom the surgery was going to be performed later in the day. He then proceeded by showing us the working of the cad cam machine while it carved out the designed stent after which a short lunch break was given which was utilized by the guests to prepare for the live surgery.the surgery was performed by Dr. Rahul Shah and the live surgery was shown in the hall where Dr. Pratik Chedda explained to the interns upon what was going on in the surgery. the surgery performed wad a stent guided and a flapless implant surgery after the live surgery, the guests performed the same procedure on the models.
The workshop enlightened the interns about the easy implant placement along with less bleeding and less healing timefor the patient.it also highlighted the fact that the use of these software designed stents saved valuable time of not only the patients but also the surgeons along with avoiding complications which are caused by placing the drill hole away from the crest of the ridge that may be due to patient or operator factor. the event ended with felicitating the doctors and a large round of applause from the interns who adored the workshop. The workshop was very informative and there was lots of knowledge about the new advances in the world of implant surgeries.
FEEL TO BELIEVE-HANDS ON
ON 11TH SEPTEMBER 2017 A HANDS ON SESSION TITLED ‘FEEL TO BELIEVE’ WAS ORGANIZED FOR THE MGM DENTAL COLLEGE INTERNS. THE SESSION WAS CONDUCTED BY THE JOINT EFFORTS OF DR SANKALP BHANDARKAR AND MR TANAY THAKKAR. THE DAY STARTED AT 9 AM WITH A BRIEF LECTURE GIVEN BY MR TANAY THAKKAR ON THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF IMPRESSION MATERIALS AVAILABLE, THEIR PHYSICAL PROPERTIES, USES, THUS EXPLAINING THE BASIS ON HOW THOSE MATERIALS WORK. THIS WAS FOLLOWED BY A LECTURE CONDUCTED BY DR SANKALP BHANDARKAR ON TOOTH PREPARATION WHICH SUMMARIZED THE THEORETICAL BASIS FOR USE OF THE VARIOUS BURS AND THE TOOTH PREPARATION TECHNIQUES USED FOR DIFFERENT CROWNS. AFTER HAVING OUR BASICS REFRESHED ABOUT IMPRESSION MATERIALS AND TOOTH PREPARATION THE SECOND SESSION OF THE DAY STARTED.
IN THE SECOND SESSION THE INTERNS WERE DIVIDED IN BATCHES OF 5 EACH, AND A DEMONSTRATION OF TOOTH PREPARATION ON TYPHODONTS WAS GIVEN BY DR SANKALP BHANDARKAR. THE DEMONSTRATION WAS SYSTEMATIC AND CLEARED ALL DOUBTS REGARDING TOOTH PREPARATION. AS THIS TOPIC WAS NOT INCLUDED IN OUR COURSE SYLLABUS, EXPERIENCING A DEMONSTRATION IN A GROUP OF 5 AND GETTING A CHANCE TO INDIVIDUALLY PRACTICE ON TYPHODONTS WAS BENEFICIAL. THIS WAS FOLLOWED BY THE FINAL DEMONSTRATION OF THE DAY GIVEN BY MR TANAY THAKKAR ON PRIME CHROME-CHROMATIC ALGINATE IMPRESSION MATERIAL, AD-SIL ACURA PUTTY+ LIGHT BODY ADDITION SILICONE IMPRESSION MATERIAL AND DIAMOND BURS. THE MATERIALS WERE ENTIRELY SPONSORED BY PRIME DENTAL SUPPLIERS. THE METHOD OF MANIPULATING ADDITION SILICON IMPRESSION WAS DEMONSTRATED BY DR SANKALP BHANDARKAR. EVERY INTERN GOT MULTIPLE CHANCE TO USE THE ADDITION SILICONE IMPRESSION MATERIAL AND ALSO THE ALGINATE IMPRESSION MATERIAL UNTIL THE INTERNS GOT THE MANIPULATION RIGHT. THEREFORE BOTH THE SESSIONS OF THE DAY RIGHTLY JUSTIFIED THE TITLE OF THE HANDS ON COURSE ‘FEEL TO BELIEVE’.
A hands program on dental photography was organized by the dept. of Orthodontics on 23 July 2015. Dr. Arun Naik who is a distinguished figure in the field of dental photography lectured and provided vital inputs.
Dr. Padhye lectured on the importance and relevance of soft tissue surgical procedures in the overall rehabilitation of dental patients. The CDE program was oraganized n association with Colgate on 19 July 2015
Dr. Noshir Mehta DMD, MDS, MS, is a highly renowned clinician and acknowledged as an international expert in the field of TMJ studies, and craniofacial pain. Dr. Mehta is the director, craniofacial pain center, Tufts University School of Dental Medicine, and consultant to sleep disorder unit of New England Medical Center, Boston.
Dr. Mehta conducted a CDE program on the 20th of September 2014, on the diagnosis and treatment of temporomandibular disorders, and also visited the sleep medicine center at the MGM institute of health sciences. Dr. Mehta was accompanied by Dr. Sandesh Mayekar who is a renowned esthetic dentist in his own right. It was an honor and privilege to host researchers of such repute at the MGM Dental College.
Dr. Rajeev Varma who is a self described, Dentist, Dental Ceramist, Speaker, Teacher and an Author, is a clinician with 26 years of acumen. Dr. Varma is one of the pioneers of "Digital Smile Designing" in India. In a CDE program conducted on 3rd September 2014, Dr. Varma spoke on the digital smile designing concept, and shared insights on dental practice management.
In order to improve and enhance the knowledge of students with regards to esthetic modalities of dental treatment, the dept of prosthodontics organized a CDE program by Dr. Saiesha Mistry who lectured and conducted a hands on session on dental laminated and Veneers.
The annual conference of the AGDI (Academy of General Dentistry India) was organized at Nehru Centre Mumbai on 13th July 2014. The program aimed to enhance the general dentistry skills of students of the undergraduate level and Interns Students received guidance at the hands of stalwarts such as Dr. Kumarswamy and Dr. sandesh mayekar

6TH INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP AND MASTER COURSE OF THE INDIAN ACADEMY OF MAXILLOFACIAL SURGERY
The dept of oral and maxillofacial surgery, MGM Dental college in association with the indian academy of maxillofacial surgery, organized the 6th International Workshop and Master Course. the course was held from 19th to 23rd feb 2014. The master course focused on imparting world class training in complex maxillofacial surgical procedures, at the hands of eminent international and faculty from the USA such as Dr. GE Ghali, Dr. Timothy Turvey, Dr. Jayant Khanna, and many more.
The master course was well received and appreciated by the delegates.
Workshop on Biomechanics, conducted by Dr. Charles Burstone, 14th July 2013
Professor Dr. Charles J. Burstone, one of the all-time-Orthodontic-Greats, during 8 hours of lecturing spread over two days dealth with Basics of Biomechanics: its Genesis, need & importance; Role of Friction in Orthodontics; Eliminating side effects during treatment; Asymmetric Mechanics; Class II & Class III Therapy; Upgrading Orthodontics as a Science; Extra-oral Appliances; Bio-mechanics of relevance while using TADs, etc.
With the zest to give back more than he ever got, Professor Burstone also lectured and demonstrated with suitable teaching aids, the nuances of various aspects of the segmented arch technique such as Intrusion Arches, Retraction Arches, Molar Distalization Appliances, Molar Intrusion, etc. Outside of USA, Professor Burstone has rarely discoursed for this long and in such detail on his passion to make Clinical Orthodontics a more efficient science with minimal iatrogenic damage potential.
